Internet Drama – a consensual field study into online consensus building, part 1
In the age of the internet, whatever appears to have consensus online is true, even if it isn’t. The converse is also true, anything that appears to be false on the internet isn’t, even if it is.
I’m using the term consensus buildingbroadly; a shared reality agreed to, perhaps even created by small to large groups of people, specifically I mean to include all social media discussions and the…

Curious and Curiouser: ProRussia Twitter trolls, tweets, trails, and Trump before 2015

Pattyds50 first appeared on the web in early 2014, making a comment on a SOTT article offering a character defense of Vladimir Putin. From there on out, Pattyds50 is solely an active Twitter account supporting Putin and Russia.
@Bonnie1776 @PutinRF_Eng @NajibRazak Maybe you need to do a little research on Mr Putin , he’s a good christian man !

Follow the White Rabbit, indeed; Wiki wars, QAnon style Pt. 1

Wikipedia We Have a Problem has always focused on behaviors in collaborative, online consensus building. This case study began exploring “heated” consensus building on Wikipedia in late 2013, before GamerGate and certainly before the misinformations wars of 2016 and the election of our Twitter President.
My case studywas, while professional and polite, rather confrontational with individuals in…
Operation Muted Persuasion. (Or how to disrupt troll farms on Twitter)
Some persuasion campaigns are mild, some are extreme.
I only care about the extreme ones - and they are often easy to neutralize.
A more simple way to introduce these persuasion campaigns is by calling them what they are; Operation MindFuck on the American population.
How do we know it is a persuasion campaign? One clue is this story is promoted by RT, Russia Today, a known propaganda source for the Kremlin.
The latest persuasion campaign is designed to discredit Mueller’s investigation and to suppress votes against Trump in the coming 2018 Election.
Searching Twitter for the terms WMD and Mueller, you will find some of the primary influencers of this operation. Some influencers may not be aware they are spreading an influence campaign, but many are operating troll farms continuing with the noise to signal operation.
After RT posts a piece of propaganda, Twitter responds in kind.
One has to feel empathy for @MichaelCohen212 - he said he had to protect his family - #RobertMueller threatening his family negates anything he says. Liar Mueller who testified to Existence of WMD to help start Iraqi war - Million plus died - many Americans #MuellerWitchHunt

The goal of this operation is to create uncertainty about any and all trusted sources or institutions so no one knows who or what to believe any more.
By attempting to discredit Mueller to those who tend to vote independent or progressive, they are linking Mueller’s testimony to Congress in 2003 regarding WMD in Iraq. This is meant to divide the anti-war crowd (largely democratic and progressive) to suppress their votes in the coming election.
When encountering this line of persuasion, it is remarkably simple to neutralize the conversation by agreeing with them that Mueller, a Republican, and the entire RNC, including FOX News, Hannity and Coulter all lied to the American people about WMD. And now, that very same RNC and FOX channel wants us to believe them again about Trump.
By agreeing with them about using WMD as the “card” of credibility, they actually give ammunition to the argument that their own voices cannot be trusted.

Remember, as always, have fun neutralizing persuasion campaigns on Twitter, make it fun and don’t respond in a toxic manner.
They hate that.

Recently, Tim Farley and Wikipedia editor Roxy the Dog collaborated with Wikipedia editor and troll farm operator Dan Skeptic in two skeptic influence operations to discredit me on Wikipedia and the “Fringe Theory Noticeboard”, a forum on Wikipedia where skeptics meet and discuss changes to articles or get help from other skeptics.
One influence operation was started by Tim Farley, and the second…

RationalWiki is gas lighting, lying, & covering up platform wide harassment

RationalWiki’s troll farm is now officially engaging in the willful publication of deception and cover-up regarding their community’s harassment both on their own platform, as well as Wikipedia where they operate.
Each time Wikipedia, We Have a Problemexposes a new event regarding this strange and quirky troll farm – a RationalWiki editor or two (often just various sock puppets of one individual,…
Will a definition of online harassment please stand up?
According to the verge, there is no consensus on what actually defines “online harassment”, especially amongst internet users, which makes building tools to solve online harassment cloudy. What’s more, even when users do agree on where the harassment is, they still disagree on where it begins.
Clearly, we need a consensus on what online harassment is if we have to develop tools and new…

Come play Wikipedia’s “BLP-Pallooza”

Last week Entrepreneur online featured a guest writer, Amy Osmond Cook – who blogged about “what she learned when her Wikipedia page was deleted”.
Her biography or “BLP” (Biography of a Living Person) was on Wikipedia for a few months, before, as she says “a Wikipedia editor deleted my article” where she claims it was “taken over by trolls”.
Amy will probably do a better job than I of telling her…
